Widening social inequality is failing the most vulnerable.

Commenting on the report from the End Child Poverty Coalition, revealing that in some areas of the UK more than half of children are living in poverty, Lee Dargue, Birmingham Ladwyood Parliamentary Spokesperson, said:

“This is yet another report showing how central government, and the local authority in Birmingham, are failing to protect the most vulnerable in society.

“The government is busy working to deliver a highly-damaging Hard Brexit, and claiming everything is fine. Labour-run Birmingham council seems to want to blame the Tories for everything, taking no accountability for their own decisions as well.

“Half of the top 6 worst locations for child poverty in the UK are in Birmingham areas – with Ladywood being second, with over half of children showing as in poverty. This cannot be allowed to continue.

“In government, Liberal Democrats delivered the largest increase in early years school funding, expanded free school meal provision and increased support for young people’s mental health.
“These remain the Party’s, and my personal priorities. Liberal Democrats are needed, now more than ever, to continue our work to protect the must vulnerable in our society – starting with our children.”
