Growth in infant mortality highlights desperate pressures on the NHS

Commenting on figures released today which show the first two-year increase in infant mortality rates in England and Wales for the last 30 years, Health Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats in the West Midlands, Lee Dargue said:

“Infant mortality has been declining for decades in England and Wales. We should applaud this, but not allow us to be complacent.

“Figures released today shows a worrying increase in infant mortality rates over the last two years. Many of us can, thankfully, not begin to imagine the pain of losing a child.

“We must know what is driving this disturbing reversal of historic falls in infant mortality. The fact that the NHS is under such financial strain, with major staffing pressures, could be a factor.

“That is why the Liberal Democrats would to put a penny in the pound on income tax, to sustain good quality services in the NHS now, before introducing a dedicated Health and Care Tax.”
